Many people are afraid to leave home because of crimes. Some believe that more action should be taken to prevent crimes, but others feel little can be done. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

(范文)

Many people today commit crimes for different reasons, for example, for earning easy money or for showing their anger. I believe that we can take some measures to curb crime, although tackling the root cause of crime is not easy.

There are many approaches we can adopt to deter crime. For example, the authorities can increase the visibility of police on the street, and if necessary, equip police officers with weapons, which can act as an effective deterrent. Another method is to use security cameras in public places, since these devices can capture the images of criminals to help catch criminals and take them to court. These methods are particularly important in crime hot-spots, where crimes happen frequently.

However, Some people are not confident in the effectiveness of these measures to combat crime because they believe that the economic slowdown and poverty are the primary causes of crime. Many companies have to downsize the workforce to cut the operating cost, and because of the high unemployment rate, some jobless people have chosen to commit crimes such as shoplifting, robberies, frauds and drug trading to get by. This problem is widespread among those poorly educated people, who cannot find employment and are not aware of their legal responsibilities.

In my view, education is another solution to crime, although it may take time to see the impact of giving young people more educational opportunities. If they attend school, they would realise that violence, drug trade and theft are all illegal. Similarly, schools or communities can provide vocational training to help them to acquire skills such as bookkeeping and culinary skills which can open the door to job possibilities. They would not make money outside laws, as long as they can find employment and have a steady source of income.

Some people say there is no need for printing newspapers. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

(范文)

Before accessing whether a product is not needed in nowadays society, we may have to find out the exact definition of “need”; it testifies in this essay whether a type of commodity still has uniqueness that it cannot be fully replaced by another.

For those voting the removal of newspapers in current society, they do have confidence to say that most of the functions of newspapers are dwarfed, or at least substituted by new modes of news learning, most of which are easily acquired via portable internet terminals. It may be true that this replacement is inevitable, because many human needs for accessing news are more than just fulfilled during their use of the news apps, internet media on their portable devices—cell phones, laptops and tablet computers, etc.—which have already prevailed among the entire society. Those capacitive or LCD screens bring people new reading experiences; they can gain news, compared with the traditional paper printing media, not just by reading words or static pictures, but also by gaining vocals, GIFs or even videos. This is definitely more concretized than those conventional, plain expressions on newspapers, without mentioning that the printing means is extremely limited in timeslot of the news release: after all, it takes time from printing out publications to delivering and handing out them to customers, but this type of sunk costs is saved by the cyber way.

Whereas the thinking exhibited in the paragraph would sound relatively myopic, since it doesn’t see past the truth hidden in the phenomenon: things that prevail for a long time, always have their own characteristics that cannot fully be inherited or surmounted. Newspapers, even are not as that welcomed by this era, still possess the nature that at least overwhelms other news learning mediums contemporarily. There still exists no internet media, or portable internet methods can integrate news pieces so efficiently and readably as do newspapers, on which information is categorized and published horizontally in columns, with bolded, large titles to illustrate the main points; such releasing pattern is extremely useful for searching swiftly and make gist reading and interest focuses easily. This benefits from the traditional paper printing mode, since it is light and foldable, which permits producers to make it large and easily carried; yet all the modern ways can still not provide such a visual field or folding availability; they may otherwise be heavy or facing technical barriers on the displays.

In conclusion, I would argue that newspapers are still not the fate of being fully dismissed in news market since they are with their unique benefits that cannot be surpassed as that easily by other news applications.

Some people think that the only way to improve safety of our roads is to give much stricter punishments on driving offenses. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

(范文)

The way of promoting better driving habits has drawn attention to the public nowadays. Personally, I disagree with the idea that imposing stricter punishments on traffic offenders is the only way to make our road safer, because I believe other approaches can be used together to improve road safety.

On the one hand, stricter punishments can certainly be effective to encourage people to drive more safely. Penalties for dangerous drivers can act as a deterrent, meaning that people avoid repeating the same offence. There are various means to heavier penalties, such as imposing huge fines or even prison sentence. The aim of these punishments is to show dangerous drivers that their actions have negative consequences, and thus we would hope that drivers become more disciplined and alert, and that they follow the rules more carefully.

On the other hand, I believe safe driving can be promoted in several different ways. Firstly, it is vitally important to educate people properly before they start to drive, and this could be done in schools or even as part of an extended or more difficult driving test. Secondly, more attention could be paid to safe road design. For example, signs can be used to warn people, speed bumps and road bends can be added to calm traffic, and speed cameras can help to deter people from driving too quickly. Finally, governments or local councils could reduce road accidents by investing in better public transport, which would mean that fewer people would need to travel by car.

In conclusion, while stricter punishments can certainly prevent bad driving, I believe that other road safety measures should also be introduced.

Some people prefer to provide help and support directly to those in the local community who need it. Others, however, prefer to give money to national and international charitable organizations. Discuss both views and give your opinion. (2015/06/06)

(范文)

While some people prioritize the problems in their own communities when it comes to the issue of charity, others believe that anyone in need are entitled to financial support regardless of the geographic boundaries. To me, both views are just different emphases of the question; each view has its justification under different circumstances.

From the perspective of people in impoverished areas, it does make sense that they opt to focus on local communities. To them, their own lives have been plagued by a myriad of problems, whether these be poverty, unemployment, crime rates, or underdevelopment of public services like medical care and education, all of which have frustrated lives of local residents and exhausted the already frayed budget of local government. I doubt they have any extra money or effort to help people outside their horizons. Even the advocates of cross-regional cooperation have to compromise with the hardship in reality.

However, this principle that works with less developed regions does not translate automatically to other places where individuals enjoy higher quality of life and are faced with less societal problems. To them, the optimal model of charity is at the national or even global level, whereby the money can definitely go to the most needy people, particularly those suffering calamity of famine, fatigue or wars. Meanwhile, many multi-national charitable organizations, with their branches at every corner of the world and accrued experience, make it possible for national and global charity. To take the flood in New Orleans for example, the donations from other states of America and the rest of the world was sent to the victims within 24 hours through the network of the Red Cross and other non-governmental organizations (NGOs).

In my opinion, whether charity should be local based or cross-regional is not an either-or issue. Instead, it is a complicated problem that requires the combination of the both practices in terms of different contexts.

Differences between countries have become less evident, so we can enjoy the same films, brands and TV programs. To what extent do you think the disadvantages of this outweigh the advantages? (2016/01/09)

(范文)

People from various parts of the world now can share similar brands and movies. People hold controversial views regarding to this phenomenon. In my opinion, I believe it brings more drawbacks than benefits.

Cultural globalization has its advantages. Firstly, the exchange of culture could enhance the mutual understanding among different countries. In this way, the cultural block would gradually reduce so people would have less disparities with each other. Less prejudices and conflicts would be created. Apart from this, artistic masterpieces are available for the residents in a global scale, such as those films, music, opera and so on. Hence, we have much more options to choose what we like instead of having limited choices of local programs.

On the other hand, people who are against this cultural assimilation have their own reasons. Firstly, it may extinguish the cultural diversity of the minority countries and groups. By sharing the similar TV programs and films, their own cultural identity may gradually vanish. What is worse, their languages which are functioned as the carrier of their own cultures may also die out. Therefore, if this trend continues, the cultures on this planet would be monotonous while only the mainstream popular culture would prevail. In addition, since people all over the world may use the same brands, those less well-known ones would lose its popularity, which may pose a threat to the development of their local economy, while the owner of the popular brands may monopolise this market.

To sum up, although having access to similar culture can bridge the gap between people from different cultural background, it can have damaging effects on the cultural diversity and the less-popular brands.
